The self management programme for chronic pain runs over six sessions, held on a Friday, in Stornoway. It is not a self help group but is intended to offer you another tool to help you deal with your pain—a bit like offering you a different spanner or screwdriver if you were doing DIY at home. It offers useful tips and information on understanding pain and stress, relaxation and pacing yourself.

Patients who have successfully completed the course say it has increased their confidence and self esteem. They have particularly enjoyed the group dynamic and found it was very helpful to meet others who also suffer from chronic pain.

Referral to this programme does not mean that your GP or health professional has "given up" on you, or that there is nothing else they can do for you. They will continue to look at other treatment options for you.

Ask your GP, physiotherapist, podiatrist or other health professional to refer you to the Programme. We will then send you more information and dates of the next Programme.

If you have any general questions regarding Programme dates, venue or session times, please contact Elizabeth Fowler, Rehabilitation Department, Western Isles Hospital, tel 01851) 708290, elizabeth.fowler@nhs.net.

The Venue:

The Venue For the duration of your programme the venue for each session will be:

St Columba's Church Hall, Lewis Street, Stornoway

We use this hall because its warm, comfortable and there is plenty of space to move about. It is close to the town centre, but also private, with ample off street parking. There is good wheelchair access and excellent toilet and kitchen facilities. There is no religious material in the hall , which is used for a wide range of community events. If for any reason you are unable to attend the programme please telephone 01851 708290; there is an answering service available and if you leave a message it will be picked up later.
