Outpatients MSK:

Provide assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Services we provide include:

Exercise Therapy • Manual Therapy • Acupuncture • Education • Hydrotherapy*Back Class*Knee Class* • Drop in clinic*

Please note individual physiotherapists will advise you on the best available course of treatment for yourself.

Inpatients service:

Provide assessment and treatment to ward based patients. Areas covered include:

  • Orthopaedics
  • Surgical
  • Medical – respiratory, neurology and mobility
  • Long stay – acute psychiatric unit and elderly rehabilitation
  • Maternity

Paediatrics:

Provide assessment and treatment to children. Services we provide include:

  • Outpatient
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Home/nursery/school visits
  • Active8

Neurology Service:

Provide assessment and treatment of individuals with neurological conditions. Services we provide include:

  • Inpatient
  • Outpatient

Community:

Provide assessment and treatment to elderly and/or patients that are house bound.

  • For the Isle of Lewis and Harris the service is base at the WIH
  • For Uist and Barra the service is based at the OUAB

Cardiac Rehabilitation:

Provides assessment and treatment following a cardiac event:

  • Education and information on exercise and lifestyle management following heart attacks or cardiac surgery.
  • Suitable patients will be invited to attend will attend a 6 week exercise programme to improve fitness and confidence in their ability to exercise.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (only available at the Western Isles Hospital):

Provides assessment, exercise and education for patients with COPD which is impacting negatively on their quality of life.

  • Exercise and education on lifestyle management for people with COPD that impacts on their quality of life.

  • Appropriate patients will be invited to attend the programme twice a week for 8 weeks. The aim of this programme is to increase fitness and confidence in finding a safe level of exercise. Lifestyle hints and tips will be given by a variety of health professionals during the programme..

Women's Health:

Provide assessment and treatment of:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Ante and post natal care

Physiotherapy Outpatient Discharge Policy
Our aim is to provide a high quality physiotherapy service to people of the Western Isles through physical assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and promotion of self management conditions.

Our main objectives are:

• Aid recovery
• Help reduce/eliminate pain
• Increased functional ability
• Promote healthier lifestyles/self management of long term conditions

   
Referrals
The physiotherapy department receives referrals from consultants, all GPs, other AHPs, other NHS trusts and through the self referral physiotherapy drop in clinic.

Working Hours
Western Isles Hospital: Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5:00pm.
Uist and Barra hospital: Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm

The physiotherapy team is based in two main locations, the Western Isles hospital in Stornoway (WIH) and the Uist and Barra hospital in Benbecula (OUAB).
