Neil Galbraith
Mr. Neil Galbraith O.B.E

Chair

Neil Galbraith was appointed as Chair of NHS Western isles in January 2011 by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Ms. Nicola Sturgeon. His first term ran from January 2011 until December 31 2014. The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing extended his appointment for a second term from January 2015 until December 31 2018. The post is part-time for three days per week.

Neil is a former local government Chief Executive and Director of Education and has served for the last five years, at both local and national level, with the Scottish Health Council where patient focus and public involvement of the health service has been his primary consideration. Mr Galbraith holds an OBE for services to Education and an honorary doctorate of the Open University.


Gordon Jamieson

Chief Executive

Gordon Jamieson has been Chief Executive of NHS Western Isles since December 2008.

Gordon first came to the Western Isles in September 2006 as part of a Ministerial Support Team. He then jointed NHS Western Isles in February 2008 as Nurse Director / Chief Operating Officer. His previous post was a Nurse Director / Director of Patient Safety at NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Gordon was born and brought up in Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway.

He has significant experience of working in the NHS, including almost 20 years at Executive Board level.

Maggie Watts
Dr Maggie Watts

Director of Public Health

Dr Maggie Watts recently returned to the Western Isles to start her new role as Director of Public Health in April 2014.

Maggie undertook her GP training in Lewis in the mid 1980s, spending a year with Doctors Goodall and Mackenzie at the Lewis and County Hospitals, and a further year in North Lochs practice with Dr Iain McIntosh. She comes back to the Western Isles from a post as Consultant in Public Health Medicine with NHS Ayrshire and Arran and she also worked for the Scottish Government as the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Co-ordinator for Scotland.

Chris Anne Campbell
Mrs. Chris Anne Campbell

Nurse Director

Chris Anne Campbell took up the post of Interim Nurse Director in February 2015.

Chris Anne was most recently the Associate Chief Operating Officer for Acute Services for 7 year following three years as Agenda for Change Project Manager and prior to that Chris Anne was the Theatre Sister at the Western Isles Hospital as well as, for a number of years, was the Western Isles Hospital Lead. She has spent most of her working life in Lewis and working for the Western Isles Health Board.

As Nurse Director, Chris Anne is responsible for leading, encouraging and developing the nursing midwifery and allied health professionals; both operationally and strategically. She is the lead Executive for Clinical Governance and Patient Safety and leads the Single Operating Division.

Angus McKellar
Dr Angus McKellar
Medical Director

Angus McKellar was appointed to the post of Medical Director in March 2014.

Angus is originally from Ayrshire, and first discovered the Western Isles whilst courting his future wife, Kirsty (nee Hay from Uig, Lewis) in the early 1980s. He completed his GP training in Stornoway, after which Angus and his young family moved to Nepal to begin eight years of medical work in two different mission hospitals. It was during this period of time that Angus first became involved in service development and clinical leadership (setting up family planning programmes, developing holistic care within the acute sector, addressing health inequalities, training GP registrars whilst providing clinical leadership to a busy outpatient department and Accident and Emergency). He returned to the Western Isles in 2002 to take up a GP partnership in North Harris, and is actively involved in the community.

Jennifer Porteous
Ms. Jennifer Porteous

Director of Human Resources and Workforce Development
Jenny Porteous was appointed Director of Human Resources and Workforce Development in July 2009.

Jenny was previously Senior HR Lead – Business Support Group, at National Services Scotland. She comes from Ayrshire originally, but has spent most of her working life in the Central Belt of Scotland. Jenny is now settled on the island and is an active member of the Lewis and Harris Riding Club. She enjoys a wide range of outdoor activities.

As Director of Human Resources and Workforce Development, Jenny leads on all human resource activity and strategy. She leads the development of workforce capability and capacity and provides specialist leadership on strategic human resource issues.

Murdo MacMillan
Mr. Murdo MacMillan

Non-Executive Director
Murdo Macmillan has just completed a five year appointment as a member of the Council of Assembly, the principal national committee of the Church of Scotland, one of Scotland's largest charitable bodies, serving as a Charity Trustee and as Convener of the Finance Group. At the end of 2015 he stepped down as Finance Director of Harris Tweed Hebrides, significantly the largest producer of Harris Tweed, a role he held from commencement of the business in 2007. Until 2010 he was a senior partner in CIB Services, a Stornoway CA practice, where he served business clients throughout the Western Isles and beyond. He brings this breadth of financial, business and charity experience to Western Isles NHS Board, where he is committed to making a contribution to this important work, particularly at this time of change.

Non-Executive Director / Comhairle Representative
Angus McCormack, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Health Board representative, joined the Board in July 2007 as a Non-Executive Director.

Angus started with the Council in 2003. More recently he provides a service to a number of council committees including the Education and Children Services Committee, Transportation and infrastructure, as well as chairing the Audit & Scrutiny Committee.

Rosemary Bugler
Rosemary Bugler

Non-Executive Director
Rosemary Bugler lives in Back, Isle of Lewis. Her early career was in the pharmaceutical industry following on from her Biomedical Science degree from Dundee University and Masters in Information Science from City University, London. She gained project management experience at the Bank of Bermuda, has run her own video production business and worked in the voluntary sector. She has two sons and was a full time carer for her elderly father on Lewis.


Ian Burgess

Non Executive Director
Ian Burgess joined the Board as a Non Executive Director on the 1st September 2013 for a period of four years.

Ian Burgess started his first career in 1972 as a navigating cadet in the Merchant Navy, serving on tankers until 1983. He joined the Coastguard in 1984, starting in the coordination centre, which was, at that time, above the Clydesale bank. He is currently in charge of coastal operations for the Highlands and Islands. Ian's work experience has given him access to the coastal communities within the Western Isles, working with volunteer teams and engaging with community stakeholders.

Mrs. Mairi Murray

Non-Executive Director

Mairi Murray, Day Hospital Manager, was first appointed as the Board Employee Director in April 2011. This appointment was extended for a second term from April 2015 until March 31 2017.

Mairi was elected Employee Director by staffside colleagues on the Board's Area Partnership Forum, and was officially appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Cities Strategy Nicola Sturgeon. Her appointment is for a period of four years from April 1 2011 until March 31 2015.

As Employee Director, Mairi strengthens the link between the Board and its staff. Ms Murray co-chairs the Board's Area Partnership Forum with the Chief Executive, and also chairs the Communications Group.

Mairi has worked for NHS Western Isles since 1990. Before becoming Day Hospital Manager, she worked as a staff nurse in Western Isles Hospital. She has been a staffside representative for approximately 15 years, and is a member of the Area Partnership Forum.

Diane McPherson
Diane McPherson,
Non-Executive Director

Diane McPherson joined the Board as a Non-Executive Director on the 1st December 2014 for a period of four years.

Diane has worked in local authority as a land use planner for around 30 years. She has a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from Strathclyde University and more recently was awarded a Diploma in Management through Lews Castle College. For the last fifteen years she has been employed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar based in Uist, latterly in the post of Manager leading the team with responsibility for land use policy for the economic and social benefit of the islands. Diane has been a member of a number of local community organisations and brings experience of public consultation and partnership working with a wide range of organisations and agencies.

Gill McCannon
Gillian McCannon
Non-Executive Director

Gillian McCannon has over 40 years of experience and expertise in working within the health care sector, as a registered nurse and academic teaching fellow. Both of these aspects of her professional career have enabled her to have in-depth knowledge of the challenges that face health care provision. Gillian's academic skills have given her the ability to be able to critically review evidence and health and social care polices in order to establish both the challenges that they present, but also the opportunities to help improve health outcomes. Gillian has a strong work ethic and works with integrity and commitment. Her work is organised, methodical and thorough. Gillian believes that the skills that she has will assist in the core work and values of NHS Western Isles.
