Our hospitals and other healthcare premises
There are three hospitals run by NHS Western Isles. The largest is the Western Isles Hospital, a Rural General Hospital located in Stornoway.
Western Isles Hospital was opened in 1992 with a range of hospital acute specialities and psychiatry. The hospital also includes diagnostic facilities, day hospital, laboratory, Allied Health Professionals and other services.
Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh (Uist and Barra Hospital) is located in Benbecula, and was opened in 2001. It provides a local service for the population of the Southern Isles. The hospital has 29 beds, and provides care of the elderly, GP Acute and Midwifery led maternity services. Many of the Consultants from the Western Isles Hospital, and some from mainland Health Boards, visit the Uist and Barra Hospital to provide outpatient services.
St Brendan's Hospital, with 5 beds, is located in Castlebay on the Isle of Barra and is in a shared building with a local authority care home facility. It is supported by the local GP Practice to provide care of the elderly and other services.
Other hospitals and services
NHS Western Isles commissions services from other NHS Boards, for example Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) Surgery, Dermatology, Respiratory Medicine, Child Psychiatry, Rheumatology, specialised Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery, Neurology, Oncology and Urology.
Where NHS Western Isles can safely provide the care and treatment you need, you will remain in the Western Isles for your care. However, you may also be sent for an appointment to another hospital. Some of the hospitals that Western Isles patients are most commonly referred to are:
The Health Board Offices in Stornoway are the Health Board Headquarters. Staff based at the Health Board Offices include the Board's Executive Directors and Chairman, Patient Travel staff (and the Lewis Patient Travel Office), Finance staff, the Clinical Governance Department, Public Health staff, and Corporate Service staff.
The Health Board Offices are open, Monday to Friday, from 8.45am until 5pm (closed between 1pm and 2pm).
Stornoway Health Centre
A number of our staff are based at Stornoway Health Centre, including Community Nurses, Health Visitors and District Nurses, Well North staff, Primary Care staff, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Learning Disabilities Collaborative Programme staff and Health Promotion staff.
Balivanich Community Clinic
Some of our community nurses and midwives are based at Balivanich Clinic.
Winfield Way Offices
Based at 25 Winfield Way are Speech and Language Therapy staff, MacMillan Nurses and a Stroke Liaison Nurse.
The local Health Promotion Department is based at 42 Winfield Way.
Clinical Psychiatric Nurses are based at 46 Winfield Way, as well as the Substance Misuse Coordinator.

Our main Dental Centre is Western Isles Dental Centre in Stornoway. Western Isles Dental Centre was opened in December 2010. General practitioner surgeries and patient areas are located on the ground floor with training facilities and staff areas located on the first floor.
