Health Promotion (Stornoway Office) Move
     

Members of the Health Promotion Department in Stornoway's Bank Street office will be moving location as of Wednesday 5th October.

Staff currently based at Bank Street, Stornoway, will be relocating as follows:

* The ADP staff will be moving temporarily to the Health Information & Resources Service at Stornoway Health Centre (new telephone number - 01851 701545)
* Tina Burgess will be moving temporarily to the Health Information & Resources Service at Stornoway Health Centre (new telephone number – 01851 701545)
* The Smoking Cessation Team will be moving permanently to the Health Board Offices on South Beach, Stornoway (telephone number will remain as 01851 701623)
* All other Health Promotion staff currently based in Bank Street will relocate temporarily to the Health Board Offices, and will be contactable via 01851 702997.

HIRS on Facebook
     

HIRS (the Health Information & Resources Service) has been chosen as the pilot for NHSWI joining Facebook.

Found on Facebook under HIRS Western Isles, the site is aimed at promoting the service, whilst raising awareness of the wide variety of materials available, local health services and health events, and national campaigns. It also will focus on some of the more popular items which are offered free of charge or available for loan.

'Battle of Sexes' Quiz Night
     

The annual 'Battle of the Sexes' quiz night was held on Friday 12th November at 8pm in the Stornoway Golf Club.

Groups were encouraged to register their team before 5th November to avoid disappointment. To support 'Movember' individuals who sport moustaches automatically gained their team an extra point. Ladies were asked to be creative!

Launch of ADP Website
     

During a special event, held in An Lanntair, in Stornoway, marking Alcohol Awareness Week, the new ADP website was launched.

The site will act as a main information point for drug and alcohol services in the Western Isles.

Welcome to Alasdair MacLeod
     

Welcome to Alasdair MacLeod who recently took up post with Health Promotion as Alcohol and Drug Partnership's (ADP) Administrator.

Based at the Health Promotion office at Bank Street, Alasdair has previously been employed by NHS Western Isles as part-time Clinical Strategy Project Assistant, and Condition Management Programme Worker.

ASIST Training Rescheduled
     

Please note that the suicide prevention 'ASIST' training course due to be held on 2nd and 3rd September has been rescheduled to 25th and 26th November.

Welcome to Suzanne MacAulay
     

Suzanne MacAulay recently took up post with Health Promotion as Alcohol and Drug Partnership's (ADP) Substance Misuse Development Officer.

Based at the Health Promotion office at Bank Street, Suzanne and her family have relocated back to the Western Isles from Aberdeen, where she worked previously in the field of adult education.

Welcome to Jenny MacKenzie
     

Jenny MacKenzie recently took up post with Health Promotion as Smoking Cessation Adviser (part-time).

Based at the Health Promotion office at Bank Street, Jenny also is employed by NHS Western Isles as Crisis Care for the Renal Unit at Western Isles Hospital.

Sounds in the Grounds
     

Health Promotion took part in the annual 'Sounds in the Grounds' event at Lews Castle Grounds on 19th June - with this year's felt to be the best one yet with many families bringing picnics whilst kids played in the sunshine. With the fabulous music and other stalls in attendance, approximately 125 people visited the Health Stand and received responsible drinking advice, information on stopping smoking, as well as a free mocktail from Health Promotion and Smoking Cessation staff.

B.H.F. Walk - 'Walk the Western Isles Way'
     

Health Promotion was involved in organising a series of sponsored walks in Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra which were organised for Saturday 12th June to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Click here to for further information.

Community Open Days
 
Health Promotion was involved in organising the Lewis and Harris Community Open Days in partnership with a wide range of local agencies and services. Information, advice and assistance was available at a variety of locations - Ness (7th June), Point (8th June), Uig (9th June), Lochs (10th June) and Tarbert (11th June). The Open Days were organised to promote Alzheimer Scotland and raise awareness of Dementia within Lewis and Harris. Click here for further information.

  'Food is Fun' Event
      Health Promotion was involved in organising the 'Food is Fun' event which was held on Saturday 12th June at the Bridge Community Centre in Stornoway. The event was aimed at families of under 5's and expectant parents, offering information on healthy eating, dietary advice and much more. Click here for further information.

'Be Slan' (Be Whole)

  Farewell to Kathryn MacIver
     

Kathryn MacIver, Smoking Cessation Adviser, recently left Health Promotion to take up the post of Learning Disabilities Collaborative Manager, with NHS Western Isles, as from 14th June.

The Learning Disabilities Collaborative team will shortly be relocating to the Stornoway Health Centre on Springfield Road. We would like to wish Kathryn well in her new role.

  Farewell to Alice Spencer
     

Alice Spencer, Alcohol and Drug Partnership's (ADP) Substance Misuse Development Officer, recently left Health Promotion to pursue her dream job in Australia.

Alice will be based at a cattle station called Labelle in the Northern Territories mapping a 100,000 acre plot of land as the company she will be working for becomes more environmentally sensitive and sustainable. Alice said, "From what I have heard, if I can survive heat, humidity, helicopter rides, cattle mustering and salt water crocs, I'll be just fine!" We wish her well in her new role.

  Farewell to Katrina MacIver
     

Katrina MacIver, Alcohol and Drug Partnership's (ADP) Administrator, recently left Health Promotion.

Katrina is now employed as Administrator with Third Sector Hebrides and we would like to wish Katrina well in her new role

  Congratulations to 'Slainte'
      Congratulations to the NHSWI's staff magazine ‘Slàinte’, which came 2nd in a national magazine award of the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) Scotland. Re-launched in March 2007, Health Promotion has continuously contributed to 'Slainte' throughout the years, and has its Health Information & Resources Officer on the Editorial Group.
