Alcohol
& Drug Training for Managers:
Wednesday

The
Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives in partnership
with Alcohol Focus Scotland and the Scottish Drugs Forum
has developed a half-day training programme which is designed
to give information and guidance to employers to help deal
with workplace issues on both alcohol and drugs.
The
sessions will enable employers and managers to create a
greater awareness around alcohol and drugs in their workplace
and provide them with the knowledge and skills to deal with
issues as they arise. On completion of this course, participants
will have:-

Increased
knowledge of the impact of alcohol and drugs on the
workforce. |
|
*
|
Increased
knowledge of all forms of substances and their impact
on the individual and workplace. |
|
*
|
Increased
awareness of the legal framework within which to implement
workplace alcohol and drugs policies. |
|
*
|
Increased
awareness of development and implementation of alcohol
and drugs policies. |
|
*
|
Increased
confidence in dealing with staff issues around alcohol
and drugs. |
There
will be a course taking place in the H M Coastguard Meeting
Room, Battery Point, Stornoway 1.30p.m. - 5.00p.m., delivered
by Alcohol Focus Scotland trainers and co-ordinated by the

Mentally
Healthy Workplace Training:
29th
and 30th September 2011
|
|
Two-day
training for Line Managers was held in the Bayhead
Bridge Centre, Stornoway on 29th & 30th September
2011.
The
free training was run by the
|

|
|
Healthy Working Lives Advisor and gave employers the
understanding, knowledge and skills to address a wide
variety of issues relating to employment and mental
health. It also aimed to reduce barriers to employment
by addressing stigma, discrimination and negativity
around mental health issues in the workplace.
Employers,
managers and supervisors all benefitted from attending

successful Men's Health Week was organised by the
Lewis & Harris Men's Health Forum during 13th-19th
June 2011.
Feedback
was positive with participants enjoying their fun

variety of events were held In Lewis including sailing,
a football competition, and golf Texas scramble,
whilst in Harris golf, spinning class, and a football

successful Men's Health Week was organised by the
Uists & Barra Men's Health Forum during 13th-19th
June 2011.

a rowing competition, fishing competition, and a
Golf Stablefords Game competition, whilst in Barra
a free induction for men in the local sports centre

'Battle
of the Sexes' Quiz Night 2010
|
|
Approximately
120 people attended the annual 'Battle of the Sexes'
quiz night held on Friday 12th November in the Stornoway
Golf Club.
|

|
|
The event
supported 'Movember' raising awareness of prostate
and testicular cancer, with over £300 raised
and donated to the respective male charities.
The winning
teams were 'The Balance Cheats' (NHS Western Isles)
'The Saharan Kayaking Club' (Talk Talk).

Recognition
for Creating a Healthier Workplace
|
NHS
Western Isles was named as one of Scotland's safest, healthiest
organisations at a recent awards ceremony.
Also
qualifying for their Bronze Awards in recognition of their
efforts to create healthier workplaces were Stornoway Maritime
Rescue Coordination Centre, Stornoway care homes Dun Berisay
and Dun Eisdean,
and Highlands & Islands Enterprise's Network Data Centre.

British
Heart Foundation Walk 2010
|
|
The annual
British Heart Foundation Walk (BHF) took place on
12th June in Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra.
In total
125 took part in the walk in
|

|
|
Stornoway,
16 in Uist, 16 in Barra and 6 in Harris. Those taking
part enjoyed the event and commented on how well organised
it was.
The long
term benefit of the event will be that participants
are more aware of heart health and the benefits of
walking. At the beginning of both walks the BHF nurses
gave a speech making participants aware of the BHF
and the work which they are doing on the island.

Mentally
Healthy Workplace - Line Manager Training
|
A
two day 'Mentally Healthy Workplace' training course was
held at the Bayhead Bridge Centre Stornoway on 20th & 21st
April. The course was offered to employers free of charge
through Healthy Working Lives and gave participants an understanding,
knowledge and learn skills to address a wide variety of
issues relating to employment and mental health.
It
also looked at reducing barriers to employment by addressing
stigma, discrimination and negativity around mental health
issues in the workplace. A national trainer co-facilitated
the training with Norma Macleod, Healthy Working Lives Advisor.
Staff
from Department of Work & Pensions, Dun Eisdean and the
NHS attended the training, and a further 2 day training
course has been scheduled to take place on 21st & 22nd September.

Battle
of Sexes Quiz Night (Uists)
|
|
Winners
of the Mens Health Forum annual Quiz night at the
Dark Island Hotel on Friday 29th January 2010.
Seven
teams (24 people) took part and of those, 21 took
the
|

|
|
opportunity
of having a free healthcheck.
Teams
battled against each other to answer questions on
cardiac health, connections, women of the 20th century
and general knowledge. They were also given extra
points for being able to catch a ball and walk a straight
line while wearing beer goggles which stimulate the
difficulty in judging while under the influence of
alcohol.

Western
Isles NHS achieve HWL Bronze award
|
Western
Isles NHS were assessed for Healthy Working Lives Bronze
award on Wednesday 7th October 2009.
Susan
Birse (NHS Highland) carried out the assessment by interviewing
staff within Western Isles Hospital, Health Board and Health
Promotion. Susan was very impressed with the ongoing work
by NHS Western Isles and commended Douglas Jamieson on his
role in arranging health events.
She
was particularly impressed with the range of activities
on offer for staff ranging from Healthy Working Lives days
to sponsored walks and also the health information being
on offer for staff. Areas covered in the assessment were
looking at the role of the Steering group, the events which
had taken place, the Smoking Policy and cessation available
to staff, sickness absence and return to work and health
and safety procedures.
A meeting of
the Healthy Working Lives Steering Group will take place
before the end of the year and they start working towards
the Silver award

'Movember'
- are you man enough?!
|
|
'Movember'
(November) is an annual, month-long celebration of
the moustache, highlighting men health issues, specifically
prostate cancer.
|

|
|
Men start
the month clean shaven and have the remainder of the
month to grow and groom their moustache. During Movember,
men become a walking billboard for men's health raising
essential funds and awareness for men's health issues.
One man
every hour dies of prostate cancer in the UK, more
than 35,000 men will be diagnosed this year and prostate
cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK.The
idea started in Australia and has now been going for
a number of years and has continued to grow each year
in terms of participation numbers and funds raised.
To date, Movember has raised over £30 million, globally.

Healthy
Working Lives / BHF Walk
|
A total of 93
participants took part in sponsored walks organised by NHS
staff and the British Heart Foundation on Saturday 13th
June (86 in Stornoway, 6 in Harris). The
walks attracted participants from throughout the island.
Betty Beaton
(BHF Fundraiser) and Debra Vickers (BHF Nurse) welcomed
everyone along to the Stornoway walk and Jane MacAulay (BHF
Nurse) did the same in Harris.
Staff from a
number of workplaces i.e. NHS, CNES, Taxi firm, School,
Residential Home, Ambulance Service, Building Contractor,
Coastguards and local college attended. Pedometers were
given to all participants and the the profile of the BHF
in Lewis was raised. A fundraising total for these events
will not be available until the end of June.

event, Dinghy Sailing, was held on 15th June where 4 participants
were shown how to take a dingie out from Cuddy Point and
round the harbour. Safety equipment and tuition was provided
by CNES Sport & Health staff. Weather was perfect and
participants picked it up really quickly. Feedback was
positive with participants enjoying this fun session.
A men's health workshop manual was also given to all participants.
A
variety of events were held including 7-a-side football
competition, 18-hole golf texas scramble, nature walk,
swimming and gym inductions, and exercise sessions.

successful Men's Health Week was organised by the Uist
& Barra Men's Health Forum.
One
event, Dinghy Sailing, was held on 16th June where 4 participants
were shown how to take a dingie out from Eriskay Causeway
and round the surrounding area. Safety equipment and tuition
was provided by Mr D.A. Maclellan who is a member of the
sailing club in South Uist. Weather was favourable and
participants picked it up really quickly. Feedback was
positive with participants enjoying this fun session.
A men's health workshop manual was also given to all participants.
A
variety of other events were also held in Uists and Barra
including fly fishing, swimming and gym inductions.

Mentally

managers and supervisors. The training was aimed at providing
them with the understanding, knowledge and skills to address
a wide variety of issues relating to employment and mental
health.
Training
also aims to reduce barriers to employment by addressing
stigma and discrimination, managing personal stress, supportive
management practices and legal requirements under the

Drug
and Alcohol Training for workplaces was provided recently
which provides a basic understanding of the signs, effects
and risks of drug and alcohol misuse.
Training
set out best practice approach to dealing with drug and
alcohol related problems at work through workplace policy.

in the Workplace DVD and booklet
|
Macmillan
Cancer Care and The Scottish Centre for Healthy Working
Lives have produced a DVD and a booklet to help employers
to better support workers with a cancer diagnosis and to
meet their legal obligations.
