What if I have to go to a mainland hospital?
Where will I receive services?
Where NHS Western Isles can safely and effectively provide the care and treatment you need, you will remain in the Western Isles for your care.
For certain services you may receive your appointment for a consultation or follow-up appointment by telelink. This means that the consultant or clinician in a mainland hospital will hold your appointment remotely, via video conferencing equipment. In these situations, you will be accompanied by Western Isles staff. This type of appointment, which will be held in healthcare premises in the Western Isles, will mean that you will not have to travel off-island for your consultation.
You may also be sent for an appointment to another hospital. In instances where you have been referred for an appointment or procedure off-island, some of the hospitals that Western Isles patients are most commonly referred to are:
The hospital you are referred to will depend on what investigation, assessment, procedure or treatment you need, the availability of that treatment or service in the Western Isles, and the existence of any agreements with other NHS Boards. If the service you have been referred to by your GP or consultant is not available in your local hospital, you will be referred for an appointment at a mainland hospital or at another local hospital.
Once your appointment has been scheduled, you will receive an appointment card or letter stating where and when your appointment will take place. Take this with you to your local Patient Travel Office where your requirements will be assessed and appropriate travel booking will be made for you.

The Travel Officer will give you a copy of the Western Isles NHS Patient Travel Information and Claims Form which contains detailed guidelines to help you through the system. This booklet is intended to supplement the Patient Travel Information and Claims Form.
What if I need overnight accommodation on the mainland?
Many patients will need to stay overnight either before or after their appointment. Although the Patient Travel Office will make your travel booking, you are responsible for arranging your own accommodation.
The Patient Travel Officer may be able to offer suggestions for accommodation. Also, addresses of suitable accommodation may be obtained from the Scottish Tourist Board, and sometimes from the hospital itself. Some hospitals even offer reasonable accommodation within their hospital grounds. A contribution towards costs is available, for further information see the Patient Travel Policy.
