Climate Emergency and Sustainability

The NHS Scotland Climate Emergency and Sustainability Strategy (2022-26) and DL 38 (2021) set out aims and associated targets for Boards to respond to the global climate emergency.

The strategy focuses on addressing the healthcare sector’s environmental impact and developing a comprehensive approach to reducing carbon emissions, promoting and ensuring sustainable healthcare practices, and mitigating climate change risks.

Key areas covered are:

  • carbon reduction and energy efficiency, reducing emissions from healthcare practices, including energy use, transport and waste management.
  • sustainable healthcare, incorporating sustainable clinical and procurement practices.
  • climate resilience by planning adaptation and mitigation measures.
  • improving biodiversity in all owned or leased properties.
  • community engagement and using the Anchor Organisation status to collaborate with staff, patients, community and partner agencies to enhance environmental health. Policy and compliance, aligning with international, national and local net-zero goals.
