Welcome to the NHS Western Isles Patient Travel Service
Diagnosing and treating any medical condition can be a very anxious and confusing time for you and your family. Investigations and treatment can often mean travel to mainland hospitals. The uncertainty this presents can leave you with lots of questions.
The information provided is aimed to be helpful to anyone within the Western Isles who use health services, answering some of the common questions people have when they make a journey for diagnosis or ongoing treatment.
Your GP or consultant will make a referral for you to see a doctor on the mainland or at the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway.
Once your appointment has been scheduled, you will receive an appointment card or letter stating with whom, where, and when you have an appointment.
For bookings and queries please contact your local Patient Travel Office by phone or e-mail (details below).
The offices are open to the public between the hours shown below should patients require to collect travel documents or submit claim forms.

Patient Travel Notice – Sound of Harris passengers
NHS Western Isles has been informed that the Loch Bhrusda ferry is due to return on the Sound of Harris service on Wednesday 15th April (though tidal that week). However, it should be noted that this vessel has half the vehicle capacity of the Loch Portain.
Those wishing to travel on the Sound of Harris ferry for NHS appointments are requested to contact the NHS Western Isles Patient Travel team (details below) to book their vehicle ticket as soon as they receive their appointment letter. It should be noted that ferry bookings will not be limited only to Western Isles residents.
The Loch Portain ferry is due back to service on 12th May, however, with the added traffic from tourism, we encourage anyone needing to travel for NHS appointments during the summer season to book as soon as possible
If urgent travel arrangements are required when the office is closed, please contact the Western Isles Hospital, tel. 01851 704704.
