Free LFD kits available across the Western Isles

Free COVID-19 LFD self-test kits are now widely available for collection across the Western Isles.

The kits are for use for people without any symptoms of COVID-19.

NHS Test and Protect is making available lateral flow devices (LFD) for self-use for collection from sites in Barra, Uist, Harris and Lewis. Each box contains seven LFDs which allows the person to test himself or herself twice weekly over a three-week timeframe.

Anyone who wants a box of kits should call the NHS Western Isles COVID line on 01851 601151 where details will be taken, and an appointment made for where and when you can collect the kits.

LFD tests help identify people who are positive for COVID-19 but do not have symptoms. If anyone tests positive on their LFD they should self-isolate immediately along with everyone in their household, report their result, and book a follow-up confirmatory PCR gold standard test by calling the NHS Western Isles COVID line on 01851 601151.

A negative result does not guarantee someone does not have COVID-19, therefore it is important to continue following Scottish Government guidelines and safety precautions including FACTS. Instructions on how to use the test and report your results are inside the box.

People with COVID symptoms should not use the LFD test, instead they should self-isolate and book a PCR test by calling 01851 601151, a message can be left if your call is unanswered and you will be contacted between 9am-7pm, 7 days a week.

A useful local information leaflet has been produced on the use of LFD testing kits and can be viewed at: www.coronavirus.wi.nhs.scot (within the Health & Patient Information section)
