Major Step Forward in MRI Services for NHS Western Isles
Published on 19 December 2025
NHS Western Isles is pleased to announce a significant step forward in plans to introduce a local MRI scanning service at Western Isles Hospital. Following completion of the design, procurement, and governance stages, the project will now move into construction.
The introduction of an MRI service locally will improve patient pathways, support faster diagnosis and reduce waiting times for all patients across the Western Isles.
The project will be delivered in two phases. The first phase involves extensive building works within the Western Isles Hospital, including structural changes and an area of roof replacement, to create the new MRI suite in the former Erisort and Clisham wards’ day rooms.
Phase two will focus on the purchase and specialist installation of the MRI scanner. This phase will begin once the building works are complete, with the MRI service expected to be operational in autumn 2026.
Following a competitive tendering process, Lewis Builders have been appointed as the contractor, with works commencing the week of 5 January 2026 and expected to take approximately 34 weeks, completing in summer 2026. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to patient services during this time.
Another key milestone for the project has been the appointment of Joanne Adlam as MRI Lead Radiographer. Joanne joined NHS Western Isles in November 2025 to lead the establishment of the new MRI service.
The project continues to be supported by the Scottish Government, alongside expert input from NHS colleagues across Scotland. This ensures the new MRI service will meet modern clinical standards and provide safe, high-quality care for patients across the Western Isles.
Further updates will be shared as the project progresses. We thank the public for their patience and support.
