Marking the Day of Reflection for the COVID-19 pandemic

NHS Western Isles is joining others across the UK to remember those who lost their lives during the pandemic and honour those who worked tirelessly throughout in the fight against COVID-19.

March 23, 2025 will mark five years since the UK went into lockdown and life changed overnight for every person everywhere in the UK.

People were instructed to “stay at home” where possible and avoid all unnecessary contact with others. Contact with loved ones either through a screen or a window or not at all, created heartbreaking situations for families.

No one and no organisation escaped the impact of the virus, and where and how we were going to defeat it was unclear.

December 8, 2020 became a historic day as the first COVID-19 vaccinations were given in Scotland which provided people with the well needed hope that there was an end in sight and we could defeat the virus.

Three years on, in May 2023, the World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 was no longer a public health emergency of international concern.

Today the impact of the pandemic is still present, as are the memories of those who suffered, those we lost, and those who stood side by side amongst us, and with us until we could take the fight to Covid.

We invite you to join us in a quiet moment of reflection and observe a one minute silence on Sunday 9th March at 11am.
