Memory Clinic drop-in sessions to help with Dementia diagnosis

Breaking down the barriers faced by a Dementia diagnosis, NHSWI Dementia Clinical Nurse Specialist Georgina Pazio is set to host a series of Memory Clinic drop-in sessions throughout the island chain.

An opportunity for an informal, confidential conversation, the Memory Clinic drop-in service aims to break down some of the barriers people face when seeking diagnosis by providing primary care assessment in GP surgeries.

“Surgery staff, patients and their carers are pleased with the service,” said Georgina. “More people are being diagnosed in early stages of dementia, are accepting support from Post Diagnostic Support, and the system is working very well for people that are aware there are problems and are sure they want an assessment.

“However, I am aware that there are still plenty of people who are not sure it is the right time to get an assessment – and that is where a Memory Clinic conversation can help,” she continued.

“The best time for assessment is when symptoms first start to appear, but the right time is when the person is ready to receive a diagnosis. If you are unsure whether to go along for an assessment, or have a family member who is experiencing difficulties but you don’t know how to talk to them about it, come along to the Memory Clinic drop-in service, we can help.”

Dementia affects the brain and makes remembering and thinking clearly harder. Dementia can be caused by a number of diseases such as Alzheimers or Vascular dementia which change the structure and chemistry of the brain and can affect every area of thinking, feeling and behaviours.

An earlier diagnosis of Dementia means access to treatments at an earlier stage in the illness. A timely diagnosis – given at a time that is right for the person – gives both the person and their families the opportunity to plan for the future; and allows time to make and get used to any changes or adaptations needed to keep that person independent and safe.
