NHS Western Isles launches new continence resource for children
Published on 3 May 2023

NHS Western Isles is delighted to launch its new resource to address and support continence in children and young people, ‘Promoting a Healthy Bladder and Bowel’.
The resource is the culmination of work by a wide range of NHS Western Isles staff to support, empower and offer the best possible advice and education to children, parents, educational staff and healthcare professionals to help children and young people with bladder and bowel issues.
Bladder and bowel problems are very common but are often not discussed. This makes it difficult to seek help. Many people believe that problems are a natural part of early childhood and older adulthood. However, it is important to know that they can affect anyone at any stage in life. Continence is an important component in a person’s health and wellbeing at any stage of life.
The new resource covers a wide range of topics and can be either downloaded in full or by specific section and there is interest in the document from across the UK.
The document covers a range of topics, including how to start training, training pants and pull-ups, night-time training, and toilet training a child with additional support needs.
The resource is supported by Coloplast, a company which develops products and services to make life easier for people with personal and private medical conditions.
Launching the document at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, Clinical Nurse Specialist Tissue Viability/Continence Adviser, Rosemary MacRitchie said: “It has been fantastic to see the multidisciplinary team working together here in the Western Isles and with our partners at Coloplast. This document will be invaluable to our colleagues, children and families in the Outer Hebrides and across the UK, Many thanks to Coloplast for facilitating this project.”
Coloplast Strategic Partnership Manager, Phil Sully, said: “Coloplast are delighted to support this innovative document and continue our partnership with NHS Western Isles.”
NHS Western Isles Board Chair, Gillan McCannon, said: “This is the work of a multidisciplinary group and it shows what can be achieved when people collaborate. I am delighted to support anything that we can do to improve the care of young children and babies. From little ideas, great things grow with support and encouragement from a team. I would like to thank, on behalf of the Board, each and every one of the staff involved.”
The new resource is available to download at: Publications – NHS Western Isles | Serving the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
