Pharmacy Services: Hospital Pharmacy

Heading 2

The Hospital Pharmacy team at Western Isles Hospital is responsible for the supply of all medicines used in all three hospitals in the Western Isles (Western Isles Hospital, Uist and Barra Hospital and St Brendan’s Hospital). The team manages the purchasing and dispensing of medication stock for hospital use.

Pharmacists work with the medical and nursing team to make sure hospital patients are receiving the best treatment whilst in hospital. They advise on the best medication treatment, which includes the dose and administration, and can also provide advice on all aspects of a patient’s medicines.

Medicines contribute to about 25% of the NHS carbon footprint. To help reduce the environmental impact of Pharmacy and in line with NHS Western Isles approach to the climate emergency and sustainability development plan the Hospital Pharmacy Team have signed up to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Greener Pharmacy initiative. The Greener Pharmacy initiative provides a tool kit for the Pharmacy and allows accreditation at bronze, silver or gold levels. The tool kit comprises guidance, suggestions and challenges to help build a truly sustainable pharmacy practice.
