Restrictions lifted at Western Isles Hospital

Restrictions lifted at Western Isles Hospital

The temporary measures implemented last week in Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway as a result of a small number of cases of COVID-19, have now been lifted.

Some restrictions had been introduced temporarily last week as a result of a small number of cases of COVID-19 linked to two wards. The measures were considered necessary to preserve services and help protect patients and staff.

Normal visiting arrangements have resumed with immediate effect, as detailed at www.wihb.scot.nhs.uk/i-am-a-visitor/welcome/

Visitors, however, continue to be advised not to visit if they have any respiratory symptoms or feel unwell.

The use of face masks is no longer required, however face masks will continue to be made available to anyone who still wishes to use one.

We would like to thank patients and visitors for their cooperation and understanding over the past week and would pay tribute to NHS Western Isles staff for effectively managing the outbreak situation at the hospital.

Background

Following a small number of positive cases of COVID-19 linked to Medical Ward 1, the ward was temporarily closed to medical admissions on August 13 (with the exception of patients requiring admission to the High Dependency Unit and paediatric patients).   A small number of cases of COVID-19 were subsequently identified in an area of Medical Ward 2. Movement into that specific area was temporarily restricted, although the ward remained open.
