NHS Western Isles is urging our communities to take steps to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses

Respiratory illnesses such as flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) are on the rise across Scotland.

Newly published data from Public Health Scotland (PHS) shows that flu activity continues to rise steeply in Scotland, including an increase in flu-related GP consultations and hospital admissions.

If the number of infections continues to rise locally, it will certainly impact on our ability to continue with all scheduled services. It is important to keep up with the following good practices to reduce the spread of these viruses.

Good hand hygiene is key to stopping the spread of infection. The most effective way of reducing the spread of germs is to wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water.

If you are feeling unwell, you should avoid overcrowding in shared spaces. Stay off work or school until you are feeling better. You must not visit people in hospital if you feel unwell, for example if you have cold or flu symptoms or have had diarrhoea or vomiting in the past 48 hours.

Always ensure you cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, ideally with a tissue. Dispose of the tissue in a bin as soon as possible then wash your hands with soap and warm water.

The best way to protect yourself against winter viruses is to get vaccinated. Ensure your vaccines are up to date and take them when you are offered. You can find out more information about eligibility and a list of our upcoming clinics at https://www.wihb.scot.nhs.uk/vaccination-services/

Improving natural ventilation by opening windows when it is safe to do so, as well as cleaning down surfaces regularly, can help reduce the spread of germs within your home.
