NHS Western Isles ditches plastic straws

Biodegradable paper straws are to replace plastic straws in Western Isles hospitals’ dining rooms (Western Isles Hospital and Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh), in an effort to help reduce the impact of plastic waste on the planet.

The move is part of a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Used for a few minutes then discarded, once in the environment, plastic straws do not decompose, persisting for hundreds – perhaps thousands – of years, gradually breaking into smaller and smaller pieces that can be eaten by wildlife.

A rising tide of plastic is ending up in oceans around the world, killing and injuring seabirds, fish, turtles and whales, and contaminating the planet. Estimates suggest as much as 12 million tonnes is entering the marine environment annually. Straws are a particular hazard. Small and light plastic items like straws are strewn in the ocean and on landfill sites – even though they may only have been used for the time it takes to finish a drink.

Simply telling consumers to carry reusable straws around is not the answer. It’s up to different organisations to take responsibility and reduce the plastic waste they create.

NHS Western Isles Chief Executive Gordon Jamieson said: “NHS Western Isles is committed to playing its part in protecting the environment, and ditching plastic straws is just a first step. I’d like to thank our catering department for taking this very important action.

“Most people don’t need straws in their drinks at all, and yet in Scotland, we throw away a staggering three billion each year. There is no doubt about the damage this causes to our environment, and it’s important that every organisation takes action now.  We do need to consider those generations who will follow us, as we won’t be around to explain the mess.

“Our plans for the future include sourcing biodegradable coffee cups as well as introducing recycling bins in our dining rooms.”
