Information on mental health problems

When you need urgent help

If you, or someone you know, needs urgent help or is in crisis, call NHS 24 on 111

If you just need to talk with someone, there is help available:

  • The Samaritans are there 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You can call them on 116 123 (freephone) or email: jo@samaritans.org
  • Breathing Space offers a confidential phone line for anyone in Scotland feeling low, anxious or depressed. You can call free on 0800 83 85 87.

What happens when the GP surgery and community services are closed?

The local Community Mental Health Nursing Service organises and coordinates the care of patients receiving community-based mental health care (i.e. care outside of hospital).

The normal route of referral is from the patient's GP or Psychiatrist to the Community Mental Health Nursing Service and they will normally be offered an appointment at their home or at their GP Surgery. Referrals for assessment can also be made by the A&E department, social work, and the Police.

Emergencies:

The Community Mental Health Nursing Service operates a 365 day/24-hour service which can be accessed via NHS 24 between the hours of 5pm and 9am by dialling freephone 111.  The police and social work services can also direct emergency referrals requiring assessment directly to the service.
