And they're off… launch of Buggy Buddies for Summer 2021!

It’s back and this year the popular local buggy walking group ‘Buggy Buddies’ kicks off on Tuesday, May 18th.

Led by NHS Western Isles’ Health Visiting Team and local Action for Children staff, Buggy Buddies is aimed at parents and carers of babies and toddlers in buggies, prams, or carriers, and meets weekly throughout the summer months.

The group meet at the Stornoway Golf Club car park at 11am every Tuesday, as group organiser Elaine MacMillan expands: “Buggy Buddies is open to all parents and carers, and is free to attend.

“The group is a great way for baby to get fresh air within our beautiful Castle Grounds, whilst parents and carers have an opportunity for some gentle exercise together as well as increasing their parent and baby bonding time.”

Elaine added: “Walking can improve wellbeing, improve fitness and promote good mental health. It has been particularly challenging for new parents and families during lockdown and there have not been the usual opportunities for social interaction or group activities with their babies. Following on from the recent UK Maternal Mental Health Matters Awareness Week 2021, we hope that this group will help our families to take positive steps to improving their own mental health.

“During the walks we see the potential for new friendships being forged, which is particularly beneficial for parents of similarly aged children to their own. Developing supportive social networks with one another can help them cope with the challenges of parenting.”

Each walk will be attended by a Health Visitor from NHS Western Isles and a Support Worker from Action for Children, and spaces will be limited to 15 adults due to COVID-19 restrictions.  Those attending should note that physical distancing must be adhered to at all times.

Pre-booking is essential by no later than 4.30pm each Monday. Book your space by telephoning the NHSWI Health Visiting Team on (01851) 709842 or emailing: wi.nps@nhs.scot
