A day out in the Fresh Air: Tolsta-Ness Bog Slog

Ness Runners are organising this year’s Tolsta-Ness bog slog which takes place on the 18th of June and is open to runners and walkers.

People are being encouraged to “Have a day out in the fresh air and join the Tolsta-Ness bog slog; walk or run.” said Alastair Dunlop, Ness Runners.

The bog slog starts at Garry Beach, Tolsta at 10am and finishes in Skigersta, Ness covering approximately 10 miles. Buses are provided from Ness and Stornoway, there is a charge for this. A shuttle bus will transport finishers to Spornis where participants will make their own way home.

NHS Western Isles Health Improvement Practitioner, Jeanne Mackay, said “This event is for runners and walkers, and you will get wet feet! Whether you decide to walk or run, evidence has shown that being active has many benefits for physical, mental, and social health. It can lower the risk of developing serious health conditions such as type2 diabetes and improve mental health especially if walking in the open with nature. Meeting others and joining groups improves social health and reduces isolation and loneliness.”

Alastair Dunlop added: “Have a day out in the fresh air… whatever your motivation.”

The photo below shows water bottles, pedometers and back packs being presented to Alastair Dunlop, Ness Runners, for this year’s participants. The event is free; however, donations can be made, and any funds raised will go the Hebridean Mountain Rescue Team, who will be providing safety cover on the day.

Registrations for the event can be made by emailing bogslog10@gmail.com . Entrants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The closing date is the 11th of June. More details about the bog slog and who it is suitable for can be found at: www.facebook.com/nessrunners .
