Surgical Ward closed to admissions until further notice

Surgical Ward in Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway was yesterday closed to new admissions as a result of a small number of cases of diarrhoea and vomiting (D&V).

Medical Wards 1 and 2 in Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway had been closed to new adult medical admissions on Wednesday as a result of cases of D&V.

Medical Ward 1 reopened for limited admissions yesterday, and beds will be made available for admissions as required, using a risk based approach. The Ward has now been more than 96 hours clear of D&V.

Medical Ward 2 and Surgical Ward will both remain closed to new admissions until further notice.

An Incident Management Team has been meeting regularly to ensure all necessary measures are in place to prevent further spread within the ward.

In terms of Hospital visiting, we are asking friends and relatives of inpatients to only visit if necessary and to restrict the number of people visiting patients. This is to ensure our patients are protected, but also to ensure that visitors do not contract D&V. Please ensure you do not visit patients if you feel unwell or have experienced D&V symptoms in the last 48 hours. Visitors should ensure they wash their hands before and after visiting.

Please do not visit under any circumstances if you develop symptoms.
