Changes coming at Castleview Dental Practice in Stornoway

With the introduction of lockdown in Scotland, high-street dentists closed temporarily. All emergency dentistry was then provided by Health Board dentists. 

Last month saw the first relaxation on these rules, with CastleviewDental Practice in Stornoway opening its doors again. At the moment the Practice is able to provide emergency appointments, but has been limited in the choices it can offer. 

Some dental procedures produce an invisible ‘mist’ in the air, typically when using the drill or suction. If this mist of tiny droplets contains Coronavirus, there is a risk of passing the infection to other patients or to staff. Currently the Practice cannot offer these procedures (often known as Aerosol Generating Procedures/AGPs), but is putting in place measures to make them available safely. 

The practice owner, Mr Kalvakuntla, said:  “At Castleview we are determined to get back to caring for our patients in a way that keeps them safe. We have taken advice on providing AGPs. Our aim is to use the highest levels of PPE and decontamination available to us. We are working closely with the Health Board to be sure that come 17 August, we will be able to offer the same treatments, in just as much safety, as the local Health Board clinics.” 

This, however, will not be a ‘return to normal’. He added: “Coronavirus is still a risk to our community, particularly as we see more visitors to our Islands. We will treat all urgent and emergency problems, but Scottish Government will set a date for routine care to begin again.”
