Dignity in Hospital Endowment Fund supporting patients during their hospital stay
Published on 5 November 2026
NHS Western Isles is pleased to announce that patients receiving care at the Western Isles Hospital can now benefit from access to essential clothing, underwear and personal care items through the Dignity in Hospital Endowment Fund.
This fund has been established to help ensure that every patient can maintain their dignity and be comfortable during their time in hospital and when returning home.
The initiative provides basic clothing and underwear in a range of sizes, as well as wash bags containing personal care items. These items can make a significant difference for patients who arrive unexpectedly in hospital without personal belongings. Dignity bags can also be sent to Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh and St. Brendan's where required.
The Dignity in Hospital Endowment Fund ensures patients have access to the necessities they need to feel comfortable, supported and respected throughout their care journey.
Helen Gallacher, Healthcare Chaplain, NHS Western Isles, said: “Being admitted to hospital unexpectedly can be a stressful experience, particularly when patients arrive without personal belongings or support networks close by. The Dignity in Hospital Fund helps us to provide essential items that many of us take for granted.”
Members of the public who would like to support the fund can make a donation through our JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/cha…/Western-Isles-Health-Board or by emailing wi.endowments@nhs.scot to request a donation form. If donating through our JustGiving page please make sure to leave instructions in the message of where you would like your donation to be used.
Every donation, no matter the size, will help ensure that patients facing unexpected hospital admissions have access to the essential items they need when they need them most.
