Medical equipment notice for patients travelling by air

NHS Western Isles is reminding patients travelling by air to ensure that any medical equipment they intend to take on a flight has been assessed by Loganair in advance of travel.

Some items, including oxygen cylinders, electric mobility aids and devices containing large lithium batteries, may require approval from Loganair's Dangerous Goods team before they can be carried on an aircraft. This is to ensure that equipment can be transported safely and in line with aviation regulations.

Patients who need to travel with medical equipment should contact Loganair's Dangerous Goods team at least 72 hours before their flight by calling 0344 800 2855. This will allow sufficient time for the equipment to be reviewed and, where appropriate, approved for carriage. Patients should do this even if they have previously travelled with the same equipment, as approval is required to ensure current aviation safety requirements are met.

Patients are encouraged to seek advice as early as possible before travelling to avoid any disruption to their journey. This advice applies whether travel is arranged privately or through the Patient Travel Scheme.
