MRI Service development at Western Isles Hospital remains on track

NHS Western Isles is pleased to report that work on the new MRI facility at Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway continues to make good progress and remains on schedule.

A major project milestone has now been reached, with key construction work completed, including the installation of the new power supply and metering infrastructure.

NHS Western Isles would like to thank Lewis Builders Ltd and the design team at Gauldie Wright & Partners for their professionalism and collaborative approach, which have helped keep the project on track.

The project has now moved into its next phase, with specialist contractor Modus beginning work on site earlier this summer. This stage includes the installation of the MRI scanner and specialist shielding required for the facility. Preparatory work is underway ahead of the scanner’s expected arrival in August.

Following installation, testing and commissioning, NHS Western Isles aims to have the new MRI service operational by the end of September 2026.

Alongside the construction programme, work is continuing to prepare for the launch of the service. This includes developing clinical pathways and referral processes, producing information for patients and healthcare professionals, and ensuring staff receive the necessary training.

Demand for MRI imaging is expected to continue to grow, particularly in areas such as cancer diagnostics where MRI is increasingly being used as a key diagnostic tool. The new service will play an important role in supporting timely diagnosis and high-quality patient care for years to come.
