NHS Western Isles to mark the UCI Cycling World Championships

To celebrate the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships, NHS Western Isles is providing a special Dr Bike session in partnership with Rural Connections/ Cycling UK at the beginning of August.

NHS Western Isles will be hosting the event at Laxdale Court, Health Promotion offices, on the 3rd of August 11.30am – 4pm. Scan the QR code on the poster for exact location. Come along and try an e-bike or a regular bike (or both). Bring your bike and get a free Dr Bike maintenance check with free basic bike repairs. Or come along and have a cuppa and a chat, get some bike buying advice and find out what bike would be best for you.

There are so many reasons to cycle; it can save you money on your commute to work, it is fun, improves your health, reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, can have a positive impact on your mood and reduces air pollution. These are just a few of the many benefits. You could start by joining the UCI World championships in their challenge to cycle 23 million miles.

The UCI Cycling World Championships are teaming up with Love to Ride (www.lovetoride.net/uk) and challenging you to ride 23 million miles. Everyone is invited to take part and contribute. Whether you can manage 1 mile, 100, or more, every ride logged will count to the total. It is easy to sign up here  23 Million Miles  (www.cyclingworldchamps.com/get-involved/23-million-mile-challenge/ ) and there are prizes too! If you do not own or have access to a bike you can loan a bike for free from Rural Connections, please contact Daryll Brown, daryll.brown@cyclinguk.org for more information.

This year the UCI World Championships are being hosted in Glasgow and across Scotland. There are 10 host regions and 13 individual events over 11 days, find out more here  UCI World Championships  (www.cyclingworldchamps.com/championships/ ) or  get involved (www.cyclingworldchamps.com/get-involved/).

NHS Western Isles Health Improvement Practitioner, Jeanne Mackay, is encouraging everyone to come along to Laxdale Court on the 3rd of August.

“I have recently taken advantage of a loan bike from Daryl, and I am delighted at how much I am enjoying getting out,” said Jeanne. “It took a while to build up my confidence and I will never be as confident as my former 12-year-old self, but I am so pleased I have taken this opportunity. Come along and try the bikes on offer, you will love it.”
