NHS Scotland recommends you get your vaccines as soon as they are offered to you.

MenB vaccine

Following recent outbreaks of meningitis in the UK, the MenB vaccine is being offered to some older teenagers and students under 25 who are at higher risk of exposure to meningococcal group B bacteria. This time-limited programme will be offered to some older teenagers and some new college and university students who are at higher risk of exposure to meningococcal group B bacteria.

NHS Western Isles began offering first doses to those eligible on 11th July. Appointment letters were issued to school leavers (S6 cohort). Drop-in appointments are now available for young people starting university or college for the first time for either their first or second vaccination dose.

Note. There must be a minimum interval of 28 days between the first and second doses, and anyone who leaves the Western Isles before receiving their second-dose can receive it at another vaccination service in Scotland. Full protection is not achieved until two weeks after the second dose, so it is important that everyone receives both vaccinations.

COVID Vaccine

Those eligible for the 2026 COVID vaccine will be contacted by NHS Scotland via letter, email or text message, depending on their selected communication preference throughout the programme, which runs from April 2026, onwards.

You’re eligible for a COVID vaccine this spring if you are:

• resident in care homes for older adults
• all adults aged 75 years and over
• individuals aged 6 months and over who are immunosuppressed (weakened immune system)
• a member of health and social care staff who falls into the above categories.

Please note that those living within the Western Isles that are house-bound or have medical issues which may prevent them from attending their appointment, should contact the local Vaccination Helpline on 01851 448 567 to book a home appointment.

It’s important to take up the vaccine every time you’re offered. Even if your health condition is well managed, you’re still at increased risk.
