Work starts on dedicated space for families following baby loss

This Baby Loss Awareness Week (9th-15th October 2026), NHS Western Isles is pleased to share that work has begun on creating a dedicated bereavement suite within the Maternity Unit at the Western Isles Hospital.

This suite will provide a private, peaceful and compassionate environment for families who experience the loss of a baby. These moments are amongst the most difficult a family can face, and having an appropriate, dedicated space away from the busy maternity ward can make a meaningful difference during an incredibly challenging time.

Designed with the needs of bereaved families in mind, the suite will offer privacy, dignity and the opportunity for parents and loved ones to spend precious time together. It will also provide a calm and supportive setting where families can create memories and receive care and support from the maternity staff.

The dedicated bereavement suite will enhance the support available to families experiencing baby loss, helping to ensure that every family receives the compassion, respect and care they deserve.

NHS Western isles would like to thank everyone who has helped to make this project possible, particularly members of the local community who have supported the project through generous donations and fundraising efforts.

Lyn MacDonald, Interim Associate Director of Women and Children's Services, NHS Western Isles, said: “We hope this dedicated bereavement suite will offer families comfort, privacy and dignity at an incredibly difficult time. We would like to thank all those in our communities who have supported the project through donations and fundraising.”

Further updates will be shared as the work progresses.
