Working at NHS Western Isles

Our healthcare services

Western Isles Hospital, Isle of Lewis

Western Isles Hospital, based in the main town of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, is the largest of the hospitals across the Western Isles.

It was opened in 1992 with a range of hospital acute specialities and psychiatry. The hospital also includes diagnostic facilities, day hospital (ambulatory care unit), laboratory, Allied Health Professionals and other services.

In addition, we have two further island hospitals:

Ospadal Uibhist agust Bharraigh, Isle of Benbecula

Ospadal Uibhist agus Bharraigh (known in English as the Uist and Barra Hospital) is located on Balivanich, Isle of Benbecula.

It provides a local service for the population of Uist and Barra. The hospital provides care of the elderly and GP Acute and Midwifery led maternity services. Many of the Consultants from the Western Isles Hospital, and some from mainland Health Boards, visit the Uist and Barra Hospital to provide outpatient services.

St Brendan’s Hospital, Castlebay, Isle of Barra

St Brendan’s Hospital is located on Castlebay, Isle of Barra, and is in a shared building with the local authority care home facility (St. Brendan’s Care Home).

It is supported by the local GP Practice to provide care of the elderly and other services.

Other hospitals and services

NHS Western Isles commissions services from other NHS Boards, for example Ear Nose & Throat (ENT) Surgery, Dermatology, Respiratory Medicine, Child Psychiatry, Rheumatology, specialised Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery, Neurology, Oncology and Urology.

Where NHS Western Isles can safely, effectively and efficiently provide the care and treatment patients need, they will remain on the Western Isles for their care. However, patients may also be sent for an appointment to another hospital if this is considered appropriate.

Some of the hospitals that NHS Western Isles patients are most commonly referred to are:

  • Raigmore Hospital, Inverness
  • Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow
  • Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow
  • Southern General Hospital, Glasgow
  • Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh
  • Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh

NHS Western Isles is a training centre for doctors, nurses, midwives and other healthcare staff, working with partners including Stirling University, NHS Education for Scotland and other universities, to help them learn the skills they need.

It's an extraordinary place!

The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles is an island chain off the north coast of Scotland. It is made up of more than 70 islands, of which only 15 are inhabited.

There is great peace and tranquillity with the quality of life throughout our islands, with unspoilt white beaches stretching miles into the distance with stunning coastlines.  In fact, it’s no wonder that local beaches have been named among the best in the world.

The islands are great for walking, surfing, kayaking, kite surfing, sea life cruises, horse riding and even snorkelling with seals or, if you are much more comfortable on (or prefer!) dry land, you can get up into the hills and mountains, or maybe mountain biking might be your thing… or perhaps explore one of Scotland's newest long-distance trails, The Hebridean Way, or follow the recently launched Eat Drink Hebrides Trail.

.

.

The islands are full of rare and wonderful wildlife including dolphins, whales and golden eagles to name but a few, and are surrounded by breathtaking scenery to calm the mind, the ideal retreat for any outdoors enthusiast.
