Encouraging positive changes for families who have a loved one struggling with drug and alcohol issues

Trying to support a family member who has problems with alcohol, drugs or substance use can have an impact on children and other adults in the family as well as carers.  Nobody knows that person more than their loved ones, but this can be stressful, where individuals can end up feeling excluded and stigmatised. It is important that all involved are supported and learn how to deal with what can be a distressing situation.

The Outer Hebrides Alcohol and Drug Partnership (OHADP) is therefore delighted to have funded alcohol and drug services staff across the Western Isles on the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) approach. This is delivered remotely by a CRAFT facilitator in partnership with Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (SFAD). This holistic approach will ensure that appropriate support is provided and opens safe conversations within families and helps to meet their individual needs and improve the whole family’s wellbeing.

The Scottish Government’s Rights, Respect and Recovery Strategy is committed to ensuring that whole families are provided with tailored support. Whilst the Scottish Government’s Families Affected by Drug and Alcohol Use in Scotland Framework supports partnership working to provide help and support to children, parents, family, and wider community.

CRAFT is an evidence-based intervention aimed at those working in the field of addictions and services who support families affected by alcohol and drugs. The training will provide different strategies that family members can use to communicate with their loved ones and support them on their recovery journey. Families will learn how to take care of themselves and be shown how to interact with the family member.

Chief Executive of NHS Western Isles and Chairman of Outer Hebrides Alcohol and Drug Partnership, Gordon Jamieson, said: “The Partnership recognises the benefits of alcohol and drug service staff being able to offer the CRAFT tools that will enrich the lives of carers, family members and children. It is important that every person impacted by substance use is shown compassion, that support is provided to help those through their recovery journey and families are equipped with the necessary skills. I look forward to seeing this work progressing with our trained practitioners.”

Following the training, all the CRAFT skilled staff will be offered ongoing support through membership on the CRAFT Community of Practice group which meets monthly.   If you would like further information, please contact the Outer Hebrides Alcohol and Drug Partnership Support Team on 01851 762022 or email wi.ohadp@nhs.scot
