Maggie's Centre

What is Maggie’s Centre?

Maggie’s is a place for people who have cancer, their family and friends. It was founded by Maggie Keswick and guided by her experience as a cancer patient.

The Centre is a homely and relaxing drop-in facility that offers information and emotional support to anyone affected by cancer, ie. those who have cancer, carers of people with cancer, friends and family of those with cancer, and staff who work with people with cancer. There are several Maggie’s Centres in Scotland, including Inverness and Glasgow.

What help does Maggie’s offer?

Maggie’s offers a full range of programmes.

People can participate in support groups, use the lending library, or just drop in to have a cup of tea and find somewhere comfortable to sit while waiting for a hospital appointment. In the friendly and informal atmosphere of the Centre, it is hoped that people will feel as if they are in a friend’s house, but still able to access professional advice. Information can be obtained from their lending library, internet-linked computers, or from the organisations they order booklets from (Macmillan Cancer Support, Roy Castle Foundation, Breast Cancer Care, Leukaemia Research Fund, etc.).

There are also opportunities to meet up with other people in a similar position and take part in various workshops, such as relaxation, stress management, benefits advice, living with cancer, and nutrition. A psychologist is available to meet with people who want to explore what is happening to them from a psychological viewpoint.

People can come on a one-to-one basis or with their partner or family, or join a therapeutic group. For those who find it difficult to travel, telephone consultations are offered.

What hours does Maggie’s open?

Maggie’s Highlands and Maggie’s Glasgow are both open from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm on weekdays.

Do I have to be referred to Maggie’s?

Maggie’s operates under a self-referral system, which means that anyone who wants, who is affected by cancer, may access the services without going through a health professional. Anyone is welcome to drop into the centre during opening hours. For an appointment with the psychologist, this means phoning to schedule a time which is convenient.

Will I have to pay for the services I receive at Maggie’s?

Everything that is offered by Maggie’s Centre is free.
