Speech and Language Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions

Heading 2

How do I make a request for help (referral)?

  • Please see the section ‘Making a request for help’.

Can I refer myself?

  • We operate an open referral policy which means anyone can refer themselves to speech and language therapy at any time. Please see the section ‘Making a request for help’ for further details.

When will I hear back?

  • Referrals are usually triaged within 2-3 working days for adults and 2-3 weeks for children. You may receive a telephone call from one of our team asking for further information or a letter inviting you to an initial telephone consultation. During busy times, this may take longer. If you haven’t heard from us within 10 working days, please call or email the department and we will get back to you.

How long will I wait for assessment and treatment?

  • This depends on the reason for referral, the information provided during the triage telephone call and other factors. Please call or email the department if you have a question about waiting times and we will discuss this with you.

What can I do while I’m waiting?

  • We have provided links to some helpful online resources in the previous sections. The websites contain information, advice and tips that you may find helpful while you’re waiting.

Can I get some general advice?

  • You can call or email the department to request general advice. For specific advice about certain conditions or individuals, advice will be provided during your appointment.

What if I have problems with travel or transport to the appointment?

  • If you have problems with travel or transport to an appointment, please call or email the department to let us know and we can work out an alternative arrangement.

How long will the appointment last?

  • Initial appointments usually last around one hour. Follow-up appointments may be shorter (30-45 minutes) depending on the situation. Your therapist will tell you how long to expect for your appointments.

Can someone be present with me?

  • Yes, you are able to have someone with you during all your appointments. This can be a family member, a carer or a friend, whoever you would like.

Where will the appointment take place?

  • This depends on the reason for the appointment and what may be best for the first assessment and any further sessions. Assessments may take place in one or more settings depending on the need. Appointments may be offered in person, over the telephone or via videoconferencing. Your therapist will explain the reasons and discuss the options with you.

How many therapy sessions will I be offered?

  • This depends on the reason for referral, your needs and other factors. Your therapist will discuss your treatment plan and therapy sessions with you at your appointments.

What if English is not my first or preferred language?

  • We are still able to provide assessment and treatment to people whose first language is not English. Please call or email the department to let us know so that we can make arrangements for you to be supported in your preferred language.

What if I need to change or cancel my appointment?

  • Please call or email the department with as much notice as possible if you need to change or cancel your appointment. This helps us offer appointments more quickly to everyone.
